Mary Sue

a term used for a character in a piece of fiction who is really the author’s idealized self-image, often shallow and uninteresting to anyone but the author. Mary Sues dominate any story in which they are included and are most often seen in online fan fiction. The term originated with Paula Smith’s 1974 character from Star Trek fan fiction.

I added a link taking you to a “Mary Sue Litmus Test” to help you determine if you’ve fallen into lazily writing this over-cliched character.

Note: There are many many Mary Sue litmus tests available on the web, some pretty extensive ones at that.  I chose this one because it specifically pertained to the creation for characters in original fiction, whereas most include one or more sections of FanFic and/or RPG characters.  I figured this would be more helpful to people are writing something intended to be actually published.

I have returned from my India vacation. I am inclined to tell you how AWESOME it truly was, but I understand that no one wants to watch other peoples’ vacation videos, so I’ll keep it to myself. Anyway, there are more important things at hand. Did you happen to see what day it is? I don’t know about you, but I will be watching updates on TV and the internet every minute for the next 24 hours. And if you wish to do the same, I found this to help you.

Also, there is a great Election Widget page on the Huffington Post today, but mind you that most stuff won’t be updated until polls start closing.

I have added yet another blog to my ever-growing list of links.

The last couple of weeks I have been reading the blog of Alex Epstein and have thoroughly enjoying it.  Very smart guy and seems to give out fairly sound advice.

I have just added an Articles page to the site.  Go check it out if you’re tired of hearing me ramble on about stuff people have already talked about and you would like to read something straight from the horse’s mouth.

Well, the good news is that my Pages are all back online, the bad news is that I’m stuck with this gay theme for the time being.  It seems as though the  layout theme that I settled on (one that I actually liked) had issues supporting Pages that wasn’t the homepage.  One of the few things it’s required to do.  Hopefully soon I will able to shed this psuedo-I’m-creative-wank theme and get one a little more sleak.  There might be some more layout changes in the near future so bear with me while I get on my feet; and hopefully then I will be able to concentrate on actual content.
